The team finished sixth in last year’s 24th Summer Deaflympics held in Brazil
Kenya deaf handball men’s team is yet to hit camp ahead of the third World Deaf Handball Championships set for Copenhagen, Denmark from 1 to 16 July.
Having held a two-day tournament to select the best in the country on 27 and 28 April at Ulinzi Complex, coach Fredrick Omole maintains that the team will do well at the global stage.
He remains hopeful that the team will hit camp early enough to accord his technical bench enough time to prepare the squad but believes players that took part in the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) league in the just concluded season will play a major role in the team’s performance.
After finishing sixth in last year’s 24th Summer Deaflympics held in Brazil, the deaf federation elected to register two teams in the national handball league, under the name Young City for the men and New Hope for the women’s league.
The move was aimed at giving the players enough exposure for their international assignments seeing as the deaf federation does not have a local league running.
“I will bank on the players that have been in the league for the last season as they have improved immensely and gain valuable experience. When we begin our preparations, they will also come in handy as they will help the rest learn fast.
We are yet to know the exact camp dates but we are continuing with preparations with the players in Nairobi in what constitutes our pre-season training too.

Thika Engineers HC granted us the opportunity to play a friendly match on Tuesday 16 May and from that, I can tell that the players are not badly off. I will, however need at least three weeks with the team so that we can gel with the others and work on our plays before travelling,” the tactician offered.
From the selection tournament, 24 players were picked with Kajiado and Nairobi leading with eight and five players respectively as the competition was region-based.
